Debt Guidelines

Debt is enough to panic anyone, and when serious debt spirals out of control we all start to worry. The worst thing you can do when your debt spirals out of control like this is not to ignore the bills and calls from your creditors. When you do, you wind up becoming even more anxious and stressed out. You have to take action and take control of your debt in order to bring it under control. You do not want to do something that will make your debt even worse than it already is. It takes patience and time. Here are some debt dos and don'ts for you to consider when you are trying to bring your debt under control.

Debt Dos
• Attempt to improve your income through your employment or business if at all possible instead of worrying about your debt problems. If it means picking up a second job or taking on freelancing jobs to earn some extra cash, then you may have to do it. It's worth the effort if you have extra money to put towards your debt.
• Use a trustworthy, reliable, and legitimate financial advisor if you are going for professional advice about your debts. Ask them for references and check out their track record so that you are assured the company you opt to use is not a bogus credit repair company that could mess up your finances more than they already are. Of course, alternatively, we can put you in contact with a reputable advisor.
• If you receive any offers that help you solve your debt that includes borrowing more money, treat them with extreme caution. More loans are not necessarily the best way to handle debt issues and could leave you with more debt.
• Remember that you are not alone with your debt problems. Other people are in financial straits, and the longer you ignore the problem the worse it is going to get. You need to get professional help as soon as you can no longer cope with your debts, regardless of how big or small they are.

Debt Don'ts
• Do not borrow your way out of debt, because they can cause you to have more debt once your original debt is paid off.
• Do not make offers to pay your bills that you cannot afford to pay. Always offer to pay what you can afford and no more, and if you need to find other repayment methods to repair your credit it is advisable to do so.
• Never pay off one creditor over another as the creditor you decide not to pay may come after you and cause you another string of problems.
• Do not speak to any creditors about your situation with other creditors unless you are obliged to declare all of your debts.
• Never allow bailiffs or other bill collectors intimidate or frighten you into doing something you don't want to do. Additionally, do not allow them into your house or sign anything they may bring you until you have spoken to a professional.
• Do not ignore your debt problems. They will not go away unless you face them head on.
• Do not let your debt make you ill. All of your debt problems are solvable and all it takes is for you to ask for help.
